Verona custard shop closes for season | Business
The Michael's Frozen Custard in Verona has closed for the winter season, the restaurant owner said.
Michael Dix, CEO and founder of the four Madison-area custard shops, said he decided to close Verona store until next spring due to lagging sales during the cold winter months. The Verona shop closed Saturday.
"We are an extremely seasonal business [and] 70 (percent) of our business is between March and October," Dix said in an email.
Dix said in the past, he'd closed the Michael's at 2531 Monroe St. in Madison for the winter, but this year he chose the Verona location "based on sales numbers."
He said there were 15 employees at the Verona Michael's, including part-time and full-time workers. The part-time employees were laid off and were mostly high school students hired for the summer season, Dix said. A couple full-time employees were moved to other Michael’s locations.
Dix’s other frozen custard shops -- at 5602 Schroeder Road, 3826 Atwood Ave. and 2531 Monroe St. -- will be open and serving food and custard throughout the winter.
Dix said he's putting the Verona location up for sale, but if it doesn’t sell between now and March, he’ll re-open when the cold weather breaks in early spring.
The Verona shop is at 407 W. Verona Ave.
