The USA cycling Cyclocross National Championship will make its debut at Badger Prairie Park in Verona on Wednesday. The cycling event is scheduled from Jan. 4 through Jan. 8 and it features some of the biggest names in cycling.
Cyclocross is a discipline of bicycle racing similar to a steeple chase on the track. Races are primarily off road, traversing grassy parks, fields and hills. Obstacles are included, which force riders to dismount their bikes, run to overtake an obstacle, then remount their bikes and keep riding. The various obstacles vary race course to course, but always include at least one section of hurdles, and almost always a sand pit and a run-up which is often stairs. The race courses are very short circuits and very spectator friendly. Unpredictable Wisconsin weather is sure to provide a crazy course and lots of entertainment.
Given the interest in this event, Machinery Row Bicycles on Williamson Street will host a Cyclocross Night party on Friday, Jan. 6, preceding the professional women's race on Saturday and pro men's race on Sunday.
The party will be a true Belgian-style 'cross social, with frites and muscles provided by Sardine restaurant and beer from Grate Dane Brewery. The party will also feature professional 'cross racers, including three of the most recognized figures in the sport, Jonathan Page, Katie Compton and Ryan Trebon.
