U10, U12 softball girls undefeated after league tourney win | Parents & Kids
Two of Verona’s independent girls’ softball league teams earned wins at a tournament in the end of July.
The Verona area U10 and U12 softball teams played in the Southcentral Girls Softball League Championships, capping off an undefeated league season win in their age brackets.
The July 29 games at Sauk Prairie Middle School finished with the U10 Wildcats beating Lodi 16-4. The U12 Wildcats beat Windsor 6-2.
U10 team coach Adam Vogel said the win validated the work the girls do training twice a week over the winter.
"To play at a high level and come out like they did is a testament to that hard work," Vogel said.
The unique girls softball program was started by Kelly Keyes and run over the last 10 years by Keyes and Kim Neitzel. Keyes worked the coaching side of the group and Nietzel ran the administrative side, Vogel said. He said the girls' softball youth program in Verona offers something that's hard to find in other competitive area softball teams.
"I was a soccer coach before and was brought into this reluctantly," Vogel said. "Now I see how big a deal it is for these girls to have a place. If you go to little league, it's all boys. There are some girls from other communities that want to play for Verona who want to play for Verona because they know they'll get that coaching.
"I just think it's cool that my daughter has a place … to compete and (be part of a community)."
The U12 team is coached by Meggan Babcok.
